Start from the application rather than the product. Establish four things in this order: the vehicle (make, model, manufacturing year and variant), the seating position (front or rear, driver, passenger, outboard or centre, and which side), the belt type the position was designed for (three-point or lap, retractable or static), and the anchorage arrangement (how many points, where, and what hardware they take).

Only then does a product get matched to it. Choosing by appearance, or from a generic "car seat belt" description, is where most mismatches begin — two assemblies can look identical and differ in retractor orientation, stalk length or buckle keying.

Compatibility is assessed across several dimensions at once: anchorage geometry, retractor mounting orientation, webbing length and width, stalk length and flexibility, buckle and latch plate keying, seating position and side, any electrical interface such as a buckle switch, and how the belt behaves through the seat's full range of movement.

In practice, photographs of the existing assembly and its anchorages plus a few measurements resolve most of it. Where they do not, the honest answer is that a physical check on the vehicle is required — and we would rather say that than issue a confident guess.

In practice, yes. Anchorage positions, retractor mounting angle, stalk length, webbing length and buckle keying are all designed around a particular vehicle and a particular seating position. Manufacturers also change restraint hardware between variants and across facelifts within the same model name.

Some components are shared across models or variants, and where that is the case it can genuinely simplify sourcing. But it has to be confirmed case by case rather than assumed from appearance — "it looks the same" is not a compatibility assessment.

Eight factors cover almost every case:

• Anchorage geometry — position, spacing, angle and hardware
• Retractor mounting orientation, because sensing is calibrated for a specific angle
• Webbing length and width
• Stalk length and sleeve flexibility
• Buckle and latch plate keying, kept as a matched pair
• Seating position and side of the cabin
• Electrical interfaces — buckle switches, pretensioner connectors, wiring
• Seat interaction through its full range of slide, recline and fold

No. If a seating position was designed around a three-point belt, a three-point belt is what should be restored to it. A lap belt restrains the pelvis only and leaves the upper torso unrestrained, which is a materially different level of protection.

Availability, cost or convenience are not sound reasons to make that substitution. If a three-point assembly is difficult to source for a particular vehicle, tell us — that is a sourcing problem to work on, not a reason to change the restraint type.

Not as a straightforward parts swap. A three-point belt requires an upper anchorage capable of carrying shoulder-belt load, correctly positioned and adequately reinforced within the vehicle's structure. Where such an anchorage does not already exist, adding one is a structural modification rather than a fitting job.

This should be assessed by a qualified automotive engineer or an authorised service centre with reference to the vehicle's construction and the applicable regulations. We are happy to discuss the hardware, but the anchorage question has to be settled first.

• Vehicle make, model, manufacturing year and variant or trim level

• A clear description of the symptom, not just "the belt is broken"

• Anchorages are structural, with specified fasteners, washer arrangements and torque values
• Many modern assemblies contain a pyrotechnic pretensioner with defined handling requirements
• Buckle switch and pretensioner circuits interact with the vehicle's restraint control system
• Function — extension, retraction, locking, latching, release and clearance — must be verified after fitting

For these reasons installation should be carried out by a qualified automotive technician or an authorised service centre, following the vehicle manufacturer's procedures.

No. We supply seat belts and restraint components; we do not fit them. That separation is deliberate — installation, anchorage assessment, torque and post-installation verification require the vehicle, the manufacturer's procedures and the right tools.
